Your Spring Maintenance Checklist

Do you know where to start with your spring maintenance? Find out here.

Let's break your home down section-by-section to create an easy-to-follow checklist that will ensure your home is as fresh and beautiful as a patch of spring flowers.

Exterior/Lawn Maintenance List

  • Check the roof for damage. You'll want to make sure there is no way spring showers can penetrate through damages or missing shingles in the roof.
  • Check the gutters for proper drainage. Your gutters and downspouts will see gallons upon gallons of water as the season gets into full swing; make sure they're effectively carrying the water away from your home's foundation.
  • Perform a chimney check. Even if you've used your chimney throughout the winter, it's still a wise idea to discover if it needs to be resealed to prevent water infiltration.
  • Give your HVAC system a checkup. You'll want all the components of your HVAC system to continue running efficiently throughout the year. Spring is the perfect time to have an annual inspection and tune-up completed.
  • Check all wood decking, fences, and railings for signs of rot or warping. As summer gets closer, you'll want to enjoy your yard safely. Make sure all woodwork isn't showing signs of decay.
  • Cover concrete cracks. Is your driveway, walkway, or patio cracked? Reseal them now to prevent any rain from causing further damage.
  • Inspect all windows and doors. Give adequate attention to all areas where air or insects could penetrate your home. Fill cracks and caulk any edges that have holes. Also, make sure that all door and window screens are functioning properly and do not have any signs of damage.
  • Verify your sprinkler system is working correctly. Breakdowns in sprinkler heads or lines can seriously increase your water bill. Test your entire sprinkler system and call a professional if you discover any problems.

Interior Maintenance List:

  • Inspect your neglected rooms first. Whether it's the attic, basement, garage, or spare bedroom that never sees use, you'll want to start your interior cleaning in the overlooked areas of the home. Check for unwanted moisture, signs of insects, or any odd smells that are present.
  • Check your safety equipment. While you're cleaning the home, it's easy to add a safety equipment check to the list. Doing this ensures that you won't forget to check your fire extinguishers, smoke detectors, exhaust fans, and alarm systems.
  • Clean out ventilation. Your heating and AC vents, as well as your dryer vents, need to be cleaned out to ensure that your appliances continue to work properly.
  • Check the garage door system. Though your garage door system should last for years, it's a smart idea to make sure no components are loose or seem to be working inefficiently.
  • Dust away. Focus on your home from top to bottom when dusting. First, do the fan blades, cabinet tops, and light fixtures then move down to counter surfaces, tables, and appliances.
  • Clean out closets and storage areas. If you haven't touched it in a year, you may be able to sell or donate it. Create a pile of clothing and other items that will free up extra space.
  • Check dates in the pantry and medicine cabinet. Confirm all food and medicine items are not expired.
  • Clean bathrooms and kitchen top to bottom. A good scrub and disinfecting will make your daily-use areas shine.

By adding these items to your spring cleaning list, you'll make sure your home is clean, safe, and functioning optimally inside and out.
