Which Home Improvement Projects Are Booming During the Pandemic?

See what home improvement projects have been especially popular during the pandemic.

With most homeowners spending much more time in their houses during the pandemic, it's no surprise that home improvement projects are on the rise. The average home is now the setting for work and school in addition to being a place for relaxing, gathering, and entertaining. While we don't yet know when our "new normal" will be the new normal, it's clear that many homeowners are investing in their living spaces to be fully prepared to live, work, and play comfortably no matter what the future brings. These five home improvement projects have been especially popular during the pandemic.

  1. Outdoor Living Spaces
The good news is that social distancing has encouraged many of us to enjoy the great outdoors; the bad news is that public spaces tend to get crowded with so many people outdoors. Many homeowners have been investing in their backyards to create opportunities for outdoor living. New outdoor amenities provide those in the home with extra space to relax and play from new swimming pools and sports courts to decks, patios, and outdoor kitchens.
  2. Kitchen Remodels
Kitchen remodels are always one of the top two renovations completed in the home, and the pandemic has only increased these projects. With many restaurants operating at limited capacity or canceling dine-in service altogether, families spend more time eating at home. The appearance and functionality of a kitchen are being reconsidered as homeowners cook the majority of their meals. Appliance upgrades, more counter/cabinet space, and the addition of eat-in kitchens or islands with bar seating are popular choices for growing families.
  3. Bathroom Remodels
Like kitchens, bathrooms are a top renovation project for homeowners. As we continue to endure the changes presented by the pandemic, many homeowners desire a space where they can truly relax all by themselves. Bathroom remodels remain a popular project as more and more people seek a space of serenity. Softer lighting, new fixtures, and lavish amenities such as a jetted tub or steam shower can deliver a peaceful setting that homeowners can retreat to on a moment's notice.
  4. Home Additions/Extensions
Sadly, some homes just weren't equipped with the space necessary to meet all residents' needs at every moment. Many students and older adults are also now moving back under one roof, further increasing the need for additional space. Some homeowners expand their square-footage by building additions or extensions on their homes to combat the limited space available. These interior additions can instantly provide dedicated spaces for extra residents, offices, gyms, or family gathering areas and make the home feel less cramped.
  5. Multipurpose Spaces
The home is much more than a home today: it's an office, a classroom, a gym, an activity center, and so much more. The value of a multipurpose space has never been higher, which is why so many homeowners are trying to convert unused areas like basements, attics, and guest bedrooms into spaces that serve multiple purposes. Homeowners in colder climates are especially trying to maximize their indoor multipurpose space to meet their entire family's lifestyle needs during the winter months.

Now more than ever, it's essential that you and your family feel completely comfortable in your own home. If you believe that your living spaces could use a little enhancement, consider these five pandemic projects to maximize your home's livability.
