Prep Your Lawn Like a Pro: Spring Lawn Care Tips For a Greener Summer

As winter fades and the sun begins to shine a little longer each day, it's time to turn your attention to your lawn. Spring is the ideal time to lay the groundwork (literally) for a lush, green yard that thrives through the summer.

Whether you're aiming for a golf-course look or just want healthier grass underfoot, these spring lawn care tips will help you get there:

1. Start With a Clean Slate

Before doing anything else, give your lawn a good cleanup. Remove branches, leaves, and any debris that may have accumulated over the winter. This allows sunlight, air, and water to reach the soil properly and also encourages healthy grass growth. Make sure to rake gently to avoid damaging any new grass shoots emerging.

2. Test Your Soil

Healthy lawns start with healthy soil. A simple soil test (available at local garden centers or online) can reveal your lawn's pH and nutrient levels. This helps you determine whether you need to add lime, sulphur, or other amendments. Grass generally prefers a neutral pH, around 6.5 to 7.0.

3. Aerate the Lawn

If your soil is compacted, which is common after a long winter or heavy foot traffic, aeration is a must. Aerating involves punching small holes in the soil to allow air, water, and nutrients to reach the grass roots. You can rent a machine or hire a service. Either way, doing this once a year in spring can dramatically improve lawn health.

4. Overseed Bare Spots

Spotty patches? No problem. Overseeding involves spreading grass seed over existing turf to fill in thin areas. Choose a grass variety suited to your region and existing lawn. For best results, overseed after aerating, and keep the area consistently moist until the seeds sprout.

5. Fertilize Wisely

Spring is the season to feed your lawn, but timing matters. Wait until your grass is actively growing and you've mowed once or twice before applying fertilizer. A slow-release, nitrogen-rich fertilizer will give your lawn the nutrients it needs without causing a surge of fast, weak growth.

6. Water Deeply, Not Frequently

While spring rains often help, keep an eye on your lawn's moisture. Water deeply once or twice a week rather than lightly every day. This encourages deep-root growth and a more drought-resistant lawn later in the summer.

7. Mow For Health

When mowing for the first time in spring, make sure your mower blades are sharp. Dull blades tear grass, leading to brown tips and potential disease. Set your mower height high (about 3 inches), and never cut more than one-third of the grass blade at a time.

With just a bit of early-season attention, your lawn can bounce back stronger than ever and stay vibrant through the hot summer months. These simple steps not only improve the appearance of your yard but also boost its overall health, so you can spend less time fixing it later and more time enjoying it.
